Trust everyone is off to a great start this summer. Here on the elbow of Cape Cod - the very heart of New England (IMNSHO) - the season is in full swing. The days are packed with beach outings, Friday night concerts, baseball games, the hum of lawn mowers, happy pups barking, American flags waving, ice cream cones melting, backyard barbecues, and big family gatherings. In short: Cape Cod summer at its finest. And of course… there’s fishing - which I absolutely love.
I’ve certainly caught my share of striped bass and bluefin in my day, but in recent years, I’ve come to truly admire them both. These are remarkable creatures, critical to the health of our oceans. These days, I’m all about catch and release. As for the folks who overdo it for show — we’ve all seen them — let’s just say they deserve a private picnic with Luca Brasi. You follow my drift. But I digress...
Striped Bass(aka Stripers, Linesiders, Rockfish, Pimpfish)
• Found in shallow coastal waters, especially in fast-moving rips
• Feed actively at dawn and dusk (no eyelids, no sunglasses 😎)
• Can grow over 5 feet and weigh 70 lbs
• Live up to 30 years and migrate thousands of miles to spawn
• Known for their strength and fight — a Cape Cod classic
Bluefin Tuna (aka Giants, Pelagic Torpedoes, Big Blue, Blueballs)
• Can live up to 40 years and dive over 3,000 feet
• Migrate across entire oceans in search of food and spawning grounds
• Built for speed with retractable fins and eyes set flush to their bodies
• One of the only warm-blooded fish in the world
• Among the most thrilling, respected gamefish anywhere
